A Brief History of the University of Ottawa Mass Spectrometry Centre
The Centre was founded in 1981 under the direction of Professor John L. Holmes, a prominent scientist in gas-phase ion chemistry research. Over the years, it has gained a reputation as a first-class analytical service and fundamental research unit. In May of 1999, Dr. Paul M. Mayer became the director of the Centre following the retirement of Prof. Holmes.

Research Projects
Current active research projects in the Centre range from fundamental studies in ion chemistry to applied projects in environmental and materials science.
Since it was established, the Centre has had close relations with the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals and biomedical research groups, and has been very successful in solving difficult, non-routine analytical problems. The laboratory also has wide experience in the analysis of metabolites, the identification and characterisation of peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids.
