Back in November 2005, there was a call for abstracts from students around the world for this conference. It was to be the "First International SEG Student Chapter Conference".

There were two students from University of Ottawa that applied, Mike Hocking and Anastasia Vander Most, both students were accepted to present a poster. Part of their acceptance was funding for flight to Colorado making it easier on their supervisor for additional funding.

May 12, 2006, both students and their supervisor, Dr. Mark Hannington, left for the conference with posters in tow (a link to a *.pdf of their posters is at the bottom of this page - be warned they are large!). The first evening in Keystone, Colorado, was hosted by Newmont where the students were able to meet each other over drinks and food. It was a great night as 76 students from all over the world started to meet.

The next day the students presented their posters which was followed by a mentoring dinner and SEG Presidential Address. It was at this dinner where the top five posters were awarded. There was no ranking of the top five, just the five best posters as voted by the students. Anastasia Vander Most was one of the two winners from Canada. The three other winners came from Australia, Hungary, and United States.

Part of our prize was a ticket to attend the SEG Awards dinner the following night, where Dr. Mark Hannington presented the Waldemar Lindgren Award for 2005 to Dr. Stephen J. Piercey from Laurentian University. Dr. Hannington himself is a past recipient of this award.

All in all it was a great conference. Meeting many other students and industry people.

I do hope to attend the next conference in 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa. For more info about field trips and location details go to SEG-GSSA 2008.

  • Mike will soon have a PDF of his poster available - he is on a field trip.
